A new battle for the future of in-flight connectivity (IFC) is taking shape – and this time, one of the world’s most powerful technology companies is entering the arena. Valour Consultancy’s lead IFEC analyst, David Whelan, is set to begin work on our forthcoming “Amazon Leo: Aviation Deep Dive – 2026” report this May, offering a definitive analysis of Amazon’s bold move into aviation connectivity and what it means for the market.
Amazon’s network – previously known as Project Kuiper – represents the company’s ambitious push into satellite connectivity. It enters an extremely competitive market – with establish players like Viasat and SES already commanding large customer bases, and new LEO satellite operators like SpaceX’s Starlink and Eutelsat’s OneWeb network seeing a rapid expansion. Amazon’s entry signals that competition is intensifying among technology giants seeking a foothold in aviation connectivity. With its vast resources, cloud infrastructure expertise, and established ecosystem of digital services, Amazon is positioning itself as a serious contender – however, much remains unknown about its future network and productisation.
The company has already made notable early progress in aviation. JetBlue was announced as Amazon’s launch airline customer, with an initial rollout covering approximately 70 aircraft – around a quarter of the carrier’s fleet – with scope for broader adoption over time. In a more significant development, Amazon signed a major agreement with Delta Air Lines in March 2026, encompassing over 500 aircraft and marking its largest IFC contract to date. Together, these contracts demonstrate both early market traction and airline willingness to consider alternatives to incumbent and emerging providers.
Despite this momentum, key questions remain about Amazon’s ultimate impact on the IFC market. The upcoming Valour Consultancy report will explore whether Amazon can meaningfully disrupt an industry where Starlink has already established such a strong position, building a backlog of thousands of commercial aircraft. With such scale already in motion, the central question is whether Amazon is entering too late – or whether the market remains sufficiently open for multiple LEO providers to coexist and compete.
One area of relative consensus is product quality. Given Amazon’s technological capabilities and track record in large-scale infrastructure, there is strong confidence that its LEO offering will deliver high-performance connectivity. Beyond this, the report will examine how Amazon might distinguish itself commercially, including the potential to leverage its broader ecosystem. Integration with services such as AWS could provide airlines with enhanced data, analytics, and operational capabilities, while consumer-facing platforms like Prime could open up new models for passenger engagement and monetisation.
Another key focus will be execution. The success of any LEO connectivity provider depends not only on technology and contracts, but also on the timely deployment of satellites and ground infrastructure. Valour Consultancy will assess the current status of Amazon’s satellite launches, the pace of constellation build-out, and whether the company is on track to meet its stated timelines for service entry and scaling.
Looking ahead, the “Amazon Leo: Aviation Deep Dive – 2026” will provide a comprehensive analysis of these factors, alongside detailed 10-year forecasts for the adoption of Amazon’s solution across the global commercial aircraft fleet. As airlines continue to prioritise connectivity as a core component of the passenger experience, understanding Amazon’s trajectory – and its potential to reshape the competitive balance – will be critical for IFC stakeholders and investors.
