Valour Consultancy is pleased to announce the launch of a brand new report: “Deep Dive: IoT and Crew Communications with Offshore Energy Producers – 2025“. This comprehensive study provides insights into the evolving connectivity landscape within the offshore energy ecosystem alongside an in-depth market analysis.
In 2024, Valour Consultancy estimates that offshore energy connectivity service revenues surpassed $430 million, reflecting the increasing demand for robust and reliable connectivity solutions. The report breaks down the number of drillships, semi-submersibles, jackups, FPSOs, fixed platforms, and service and support vessels. Each segment highlights service revenue from connectivity fees, categorised by connectivity type, key regions, and asset characteristics—such as drilling versus production, deepwater versus shallow-water operations, and regional subsea terrain. The offshore energy industry is a well-established sector that strategically optimises operations during economic booms and scales down during downturns.
According to Joshua Flood, the report’s author:
“One of the most interesting insights from our preliminary data is understanding the unique characteristics and usage behaviours of different assets deployed in the offshore energy market. The parameters and objectives of a drillship, compared to an FPSO or jackup, differ significantly. Additionally, the locations of these assets—from the Gulf of Mexico and the Middle East to West Africa and the deep waters off Brazil—present distinct challenges in selecting, prioritising, and organising connectivity services.”
Another fascinating finding is the rapid adoption of LEO broadband services in offshore energy. Starlink has evolved from being seen as a consumer service to becoming a key player in the offshore energy market, particularly for crew welfare. It is now recognised for its enterprise-class services. However, in certain regions, such as the Middle East, India, and China, Starlink is prohibited which limits its market opportunities. Meanwhile, OneWeb has also gained traction among offshore operators, providing redundancy and fostering competition. As such, the offshore energy connectivity services market was worth nearly half a billion dollars in 2024 and is anticipated to grow significantly in 2025.
Offshore operations are highly complex, often involving multiple tenants operating on a single platform. These operations require separate networks with varying levels of application prioritisation. Operators who successfully manage this complexity will benefit from lucrative connectivity opportunities.
